It was wonderful to see so many of you in Indianapolis, capital of the great Hoosier state, for the 2013 Appraisal Institute Annual Meeting! I always come away from AI’s marquee event feeling incredibly inspired!

AI Annual Meeting Highlighted by Speakers, Awards

The 2013 Appraisal Institute Annual Meeting drew nearly 450 attendees to Indianapolis, July 23-25. The event featured five informative general session speakers, more than 30 different education sessions and 16 hours of continuing education credit and state credit, in addition to exhibits, awards and networking events.

The slate of speakers included keynoter Ron Insana, a business reporter with cable networks CNBC and MSNBC; Steven G. Elliott, SRA, MRA, chair, The Appraisal Foundation Board of Trustees; Mark Linné, MAI, SRA, chief executive officer, ValueScape Analytics, Inc.; Rene Circ, director of research, industrial, Property and Portfolio Research (a division of CoStar Group); and Jack Huntress, managing director, residential, Environmental Data Resources.

Five appraisers were honored during an awards dinner July 25. Harry B. Holzhauer, MAI, SRA, SRPA, formerly of Lake Oswego, Ore., posthumously received the AI Lifetime Achievement Award. Robin C. Amorin, MAI, of Austin, Texas, received the Outstanding Service Award. President’s Award recipients were Roscoe W. “Rocky” Shiplett, MAI, of Charlotte, N.C.; William D. “Otto” Spence, MAI, of Louisville, Ky.; and Sandra K. Adomatis, SRA, of Punta Gorda, Fla. AI Meets with White House, HUD Leaders

President-Elect Ken P. Wilson, MAI, SRA, joined White House and U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development leaders July 18 in Washington for a discussion on the interface of energy efficiency and housing finance. Ken addressed green mortgage underwriting and appraisals. While FHA and the GSEs have piloted or allowed the use of energy efficient mortgages – providing for more generous debt ratios or allowing for increased valuation of properties with energy efficiency features -these products have had limited traction in the marketplace.

The Appraisal Institute urged policy revisions to the FHA lender guidelines as they relate to green and energy efficient features. Specifically, AI urged that FHA guidelines address concerns that appraisers have reported regarding underwriter review of appraisals that include green or energy efficiency adjustments.

AI to Premiere Litigation Course

The Appraisal Institute will premiere its Litigation Assignments for Residential Appraisers: Doing Expert Work on Atypical Cases course Sept. 7.

This course will show appraisers how atypical residential properties are thoroughly analyzed for purposes of litigation. Attendees will learn to discern the difference between partial and complete remediation and their role in this appraisal problem, as well as how disclosure defects may impact market value, and what to do when a typical sales comparison approach is not applicable.
