Did you know that the Appraisal Institute maintains an active presence in Washington, D.C., throughout the year on behalf of its individuals and the valuation profession as a whole?

AI Hosts LDAC, Stakeholder Forum

It was a fantastic experience to be in our nation’s capital last week for two terrific events!

AI’s 45th Leadership Development & Advisory Council Conference, May 23-25, provided a great opportunity for nearly 100 of AI’s up-and-coming leaders to gather in Washington, D.C., and meet with Congressional leaders and their staff, while also addressing the future of the valuation profession.

The Appraisal Institute also held its second Stakeholder Forum, where real estate industry leaders and key government officials discussed residential collateral valuation, focusing on synchronizing client needs and service delivery in a time of rapid data and technology advancement.

AI Annual Meeting General Session Confirmed

The 2013 Appraisal Institute Annual Meeting, taking place July 23-25 in Indianapolis, will include Mark Linné, MAI, SRA, CEO, ValueScape Analytics, Inc.; Scott Klug, regional vice president, CoStar Group; and Jack Huntress, managing director, residential, Environmental Data Resources, who will discuss the topic of “Real Estate Data: What Will the Future Behold?” in the second general session.

AI Joins Global Coalition

The Appraisal Institute joined some of the world’s leading professional organizations May 2 in forming the International Property Management Standards Coalition. President-Elect Ken P. Wilson, MAI, SRA, led AI’s participation at the Washington, D.C., meeting.

The signed document forming the IPMSC states: “Representative bodies of the international property profession, having agreed with the goal of addressing property measurement fragmentation to increase public trust while supporting financial reporting and sound economic information, we commit in principle to the development and implementation of international property measurement standards.”

AI Hosts Green Financing and Development Roundtable

Real estate finance and development leaders from throughout the United States discussed sustainable and energy-efficient neighborhood planning and development at a May 13 roundtable at AI’s Chicago headquarters.

I talked about how the Appraisal Institute is meeting challenges in the marketplace related to sustainable development by providing leading-edge education to appraisers and the real estate community at large.

AI Leads Discussion with Bankers

In the current issue of the American Bankers Association’s Banking Journal, there is a 12-page special section that covers the roundtable I attended with my fellow officers – President-Elect Ken P. Wilson, MAI, SRA; Vice President M. Lance Coyle, MAI, SRA; and Immediate Past President Sara W. Stephens, MAI.

We were joined by four leading banking professionals at the roundtable, where we discussed appraiser independence, examination issues and appraisal options and services.

AI to Premiere Income Approach Seminar

The Appraisal Institute will premiere its Income Approach for Residential Appraisers seminar June 21.

This comprehensive seminar will show appraisers how to accurately derive a value from an income stream and become familiar with the usefulness of the income approach in the realities of a post-recession residential market. This seminar is a wonderful opportunity for those previously focused on single-family residential appraisal for mortgage financing to improve their skill set and expand their range of services.

Other News Around AI

And here’s some other important news from the Appraisal Institute:

  • The Appraisal Institute posted four new videos to its YouTube channel this month: M. Lance Coyle, MAI, SRA, shares the latest details about the 2013 Annual Meeting; Paula K. Konikoff, JD, MAI, discusses the 2014-15 USPAP updates; Claire Aufrance, MAI, talks about why she received her designation; and I tell consumers which home improvements are worth the investment.
  • The Appraisal Institute continues to grow its social media presence. Be sure to follow AI on Facebook, Twitter, LinkedIn, YouTube and the AI blog, Opinions of Value.

On behalf of all in AI leadership, please accept our unwavering appreciation for your ongoing support of the Appraisal Institute. See you in Indianapolis!

Sincerely,

Richard L. Borges II, MAI, SRA

President
