The Appraisal Institute announced its “Volunteer of Distinction” honorees for December: Clifford Cryer, MAI, SRA, of Region II (Colorado Chapter); Carroll L. “Lew” Watson, SRA, of Region IX (Alabama Chapter); and Michael Slade, MAI, SRA, of Region X (South Florida Chapter).
The Appraisal Institute’s member recognition program honors members for their volunteer service to the Appraisal Institute, to the real estate valuation profession and to their local communities. Each month, the Appraisal Institute recognizes one honoree in each region as a Volunteer of Distinction. Region II consists of Colorado, Iowa, Kansas, Missouri, Nebraska, Oklahoma, South Dakota, Utah and Wyoming, plus Manitoba and Saskatchewan, Canada. Region IX consists of Alabama, Arkansas, Georgia, Louisiana, Mississippi, South Carolina and Tennessee. Region X consists of Florida, Puerto Rico and the Virgin Islands.
A member of a predecessor organization to the Appraisal Institute since 1972, Cryer has been an instructor with the Appraisal Institute and previously with the Society of Real Estate Appraisers since 1971. He served on the Appraisal Institute’s Narrative Exam Grading Panel in 2000, the Narrative Examination Sub-Committee from 1996-1998, the Examinations Grading Sub-Committee from 1993-1995, as vice governor for the SREA District VI from 1982-1984 and as president of the SREA Chapter IX, now the Colorado Chapter of the Appraisal Institute from 1978-1979. He received his MAI and SRA designations in 1978.
A member of the Appraisal Institute since 1995, Watson was elected to the Board of Directors of the Alabama Chapter for 2012, served as alternate regional representative in 2010, admissions chair-residential in 2009 and chair of the Government Relations Committee for the Alabama Chapter in 2006, 2010 and 2011. In his role as chair of the Government Relations Committee, he worked with the Alabama Appraisers Board on passage of legislation to regulate appraisal management companies. He received his SRA designation in 2008.
A member of a predecessor organization to the Appraisal Institute since 1980, Slade served as chair of the Appraisal Institute’s Professional Ethics and Counseling Committee from 2005-2009 and vice chair from 1998-2004, chair of the Ethics Administration Division from 1999-2009, chair of the Region X Review and Counseling Division in 1997, vice chair in 1996 and member from 1993-1995. He was an instructor for the Society of Real Estate Appraisers from 1986-1993. He previously served as president of the South Florida Chapter, as well as chair of the Education Committee and on the Board of Directors. He received his MAI and SRA designations in 1984.
Appraisal Institute members may nominate members by submitting the nomination form to their chapter’s executive director or president. Each region’s honorees then are chosen by their regional executive director in conjunction with the region’s chair and vice chair.
