As we prepare to give thanks tomorrow, I hope you’re finding time to relax and celebrate the holiday with friends, family and your community. My family kicks off our Thanksgiving celebrations by participating in the Knights of Columbus Turkey Day Run. We’ve done this as a family for decades, with one of us pushing a stroller and then as walkers and runners. At the end of the race, we enjoy some cold beers while re-connecting with old and new friends participating in the event. When the race was shut down for the pandemic, we ran a 3.2-mile loop around the neighborhood in solidarity with beverages in our driveway which included Bloody Marys.
After the run, we enjoy brunch together and then share time with extended family who usually arrives mid-day. Our Thanksgiving meal is served late afternoon and typically includes a turkey (either barbequed or fried), baked ham and the traditional sides. By about 6 p.m., most of us have retired to the couch for a much-needed rest while enjoying hot apple pie, pecan pie and my Mother-in-Law’s “pitiful pearl” lemon pound cake.
This Thanksgiving, I hope you have the time to reflect on the many people who have helped pave the way for you, whether that’s in your family life, your community, or your career. And in the spirit of the holiday, I hope you’ll take some time to think about more ways you can give back. I have found the more that I give, the returns to me are five-fold. Read on to learn about one way you can serve the Appraisal Institute and the valuation profession.
