Colliers, FDIC Leaders Enlighten AI Annual Meeting Attendees

Two nationally recognized speakers empowered attendees Aug.3 at the Appraisal Institute Annual Meeting near San Diego with timely information about national and international trends in the valuation profession, telling appraisers how they can remain compliant with regulations. More than 300 individuals attended this year’s event at the Loews Coronado Bay resort.

dylan_taylorDylan Taylor, chief executive officer/USA of Colliers International, the nation’s third largest commercial real estate firm, told attendees that the global valuation profession is not one-size-fits-all, and that appraisers around the world need to pay close attention to the myriad regulations nationally, yet remain aware of the varied standards internationally. Taylor said challenges facing global valuation include regulation; deliverables; focus on valuation; information and technology; licensing and accreditation; and fragmented business.

Taylor complimented the Appraisal Institute for its key role in designations. He said that the roadmap to global valuation involves devoting resources to localized technology, enhancing accounting skills and following the International Standards of Accounting and developing on-the-ground research capabilities. Appraisal Institute Advocates for Valuation Profession Before Congress

blog_presidentheadersThis month, I’m pleased to report that the Appraisal Institute has been particularly active in Washington, D.C., representing the interests of its members and those of the valuation profession.

AI Tells Congress of ‘Dangerous’ Regulation

During my Capitol Hill testimony, June 28, on behalf of the Appraisal Institute, I warned the House Financial Services Committee’s Subcommittee on Insurance, Housing and Community Opportunity that a “new and excessive” form of regulation is about to be enacted without Congressional authorization, and that such a scheme could damage the valuation profession.

I further testified to the Capitol Hill hearing that although appraising is the most heavily regulated activity within the mortgage and real estate sectors, appraiser regulatory agencies are planning to enact further changes that would threaten to tie the hands of appraisers, curtail innovation and increase regulatory burdens on appraisers and financial institutions.

The Appraisal Institute offered a seven-part legislative proposal to realign the appraisal regulatory structure.
