7 tips to get ahead on retirement planning

Planning for retirement can seem like a daunting task, whether you’re ahead of the game or scrambling to catch up. For many appraisers, being self-employed or working at a small business can make the task seem even more overwhelming, since they often don’t have the resources available to those at larger companies.

A recent article in Valuation magazine, Green Eggs (Ham Optional), explored the challenges all professionals face when planning for retirement, as well as some unique to appraisers.

Valuation Magazine Shares Succession Planning Strategies

According to the Appraisal Institute, the average age of U.S. appraisers is 53, yet some of those who operate family businesses haven’t made succession planning a priority.

Steve Bergsman, a freelance writer and author of several books, takes a close look at this issue for the current edition of the Appraisal Institute’s Valuation magazine.

blog_image_3_22_12The article addresses both the hard (business) side and soft (family) side of the succession process. It also covers the three overarching rules for keeping the peace, whether to transfer ownership to a child lacking the necessary skill set, giving up control of the company without a solid plan in place, and whether to implement succession all at once or in small chunks. The average age of entrepreneurs who seek succession planning is 57, and they look to work an additional eight to 10 years. [Read more…]

Latest Technology Gadgets Can Benefit Appraisers

Having the right tools of the trade has always been important for valuation professionals, and in today’s technology-driven marketplace, those tools are vitally important — and rapidly evolving.

Recent issues of the Appraisal Institute’s quarterly Valuation magazine have featured some of the latest tech gadgets. The Appraisal Institute does not endorse any specific product; however, here are some that appraisers might find useful in their day-to-day work.

Smartphones have become must-have devices for business and personal use, and are of particular benefit for professionals who spend a lot of time away from the office. Valuation magazine recently evaluated one that could meet appraisers’ needs on the job … and possibly eliminate the need for a laptop.

Valuation Magazine Article Reports Slight MBS Improvement

The mortgage-backed securities market is showing some signs of improvement, both in CMBS and RMBS, after coming to a halt at the beginning of the economic crisis in 2008. In spite of the recovery, the consensus among analysts is that they will never achieve their previous levels.
